What is the RULER model?

The RULER model, developed by the founding director of Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence Marc Brackett, is an approach to social and emotional learning.

The RULER model mainly focuses on two things:

  1. Efficacy: The ability to produce the desired outcome.

  2. Innovation: To generate new ideas or make changes to the previous ones.

RULER stands for five basic emotional intelligence skills, as shown below:

Explanation

These skills are essential for developing a good bond between team members and consequently achieving collective goals. Emotions play an indispensable role in creating understanding among teammates. RULER aims to develop emotional intelligence in students of the school from Pre-K to 12 by informing them how people work, and what they work on.

Emotional skills

Let's look at the skills in more detail.

  1. Recognizing: Involves the recognition of emotion in any living thing.

  2. Understanding: Then, understanding that emotion and what kind of emotion that living thing holds.

  3. Labeling: The accurate labeling of that emotion will help others to understand it properly.

  4. Expressing: Showing certain emotions at a certain point is a great way to understand team members better.

  5. Regulating: Balancing emotions at the right moment is essential in developing a good relationship.

Real-time example

In 2014, a group of researchers found that social-emotional learning (SEL), based on the RULER model, has increased high school graduation rates, post-secondary enrolment, post-secondary completion, employment rates, and average wages (Jennifer Gunn).
