Edge is meant here in a literal geographical sense. The goal of the “edge cloud” is for all the work currently being done in data centers around the globe to be done in as close proximity as possible to the end-users or the data source. In short, this means that the cloud is coming to you!
It’s become routine for us to whip out smartphones to use the various services provided by Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and others like them – to the point that it’s easy to forget the scale of data storage and transfer happening constantly via mega data centers around the world.
The adoption of the cloud has permanently changed communication infrastructure around the globe. Over time, the cloud hosting space has been taken over by just a small handful of players, steadily aggregating mass.
As the cloud services market becomes increasingly centralized, competitors are looking to a world where the “cloud” spreads to an “edge”.
