How to improve user stories in Agile

User stories briefly explain a software feature according to the desired customer. The purpose of user stories is to understand their product from the product team and what a user demands.

Explanation

The illustration given above is an example of a user stories template. Users can improve user stories if the correct template is used and the requirement is explained thoroughly. The template contains three things that need to be appropriately presented.

  1. Type of user: The first column needs the type of user to explain what kind of user is filling the template.

  2. Purpose: The second column needs the purpose of filling the template that the user demands.

  3. Reason: The third column needs the reason behind that purpose.

Jira users have Epic, which explains user requirements; it's a large body of work with expansive explanations. These details can be broken down into little pieces. User stories focus on small details without writing big blogs about the requirements and being very specific about what is needed.

Here are some key points which can help user to improve those stories:

  • The user takes priority. It means that the type of user comes first.

  • Use the right tone to write user stories.

  • User stories contain the main key points.

  • User stories should be simple.

  • Break user stories into minor vital points, so they do not become lengthy.

Real-time example

Improving user stories enhances the agility of a business. Without them, we end up with half-baked ideas about the product, which will not help with progress. A story map on the wall allows the team to develop a good workflow, future assignments, and priorities. This is known as an information radiator, and this kind of display is necessary for improved delivery performance (Forsgren, 2018).
