How to configure IPv4 on macOS

Overview

IPv4 represents version 4 of the Internet Protocol. IPv4 address can be assigned to a system via DHCP automatically. However, the administrators may need to configure it manually sometimes.

We will configure the IPv4 address on macOS.

A step-by-step configuration guide

  1. Click the Apple icon at the top left of the screen and choose the “System Preferences” from the menu.
  1. Select the Network from the “System Preferences” window.
  1. Select “Internet connection” from the left menu and choose “Wi-Fi.” As shown in the figure below, the selected Wi-FI is configured on an IPV4 address (172.16.8.72) by default. Click the “Advanced” button to configure the IPv4 address.
  1. Next, select the “TCP/IP” tab and click the “Configure IPv4” field.
  1. Select “Manually” from the dropdown menu.
  1. Fill in the “IPv4 Address”, “Subnet Mask”, and “Router” fields. You can get this information from your internet service provider.
  1. To add the DNS, select the “DNS” tab. Click “+” and replace 0.0.0.0 with your DNS address. Click “Ok.”
  1. The figure below shows the updated IPv4 address for the connected Wi-Fi.
