How to add images to a Tableau dashboard design

Tableau is a software that we use to analyze the data and make dashboards to visualize the data for user better understanding. A Tableau dashboard is a collection of views arranged on a single canvas, allowing users to interact with and analyze data in a consolidated and visually appealing format. Tableau is a powerful data visualization and business intelligence tool that enables users to connect to various data sources, create interactive visualizations, and organize them into dashboards for effective data analysis and storytelling.

After downloading it, we can use Tableau on Windows and Mac OS. In Tableau, we can add images to a dashboard to enhance its visual appeal and provide additional context to our data. We can use the built-in dashboard to add images, but we can also customize and make our own dashboards. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to add images to a Tableau dashboard.

Prepare image

Make sure the image we want to add to the dashboard is saved in a location accessible to Tableau. We can use local images or URLs.

Connect to data

Open the Tableau Desktop and connect to your data source or load an existing workbook.

Create or open a dashboard

We can either create a new dashboard or open an existing one where we want to add the image.

Add a blank object

We open a dashboard, locate the “Objects” panel on the left side, and drag a blank object to the desired location. After that, the popup menu appears to add an image on the dashboard. In the “Image” dialog box, we can choose whether to use a local image or a web image. For a local image, click the “Insert Images File” option, then click the “Choose” button and browse to the location of our image file. For a web image, click the “Link to Image” option and enter the URL of the image.

Insert image

After adding a blank object, we can now insert an image into it. To do this, click the blank object, and in the “Objects” panel, select the “Image” option and upload on that frame. We can also add a URL on the image; when we click the image, that URL will open.

Adjust image size and position

We can resize and reposition the image within the blank object. Hover over the edges of the image to see the resized handles, and click and drag to adjust the size. To move the image, click and drag it within the blank object.

Format the image

We can format the image by right-clicking on it and editing the image. In the Format panel, we can adjust the border, transparency, and other styling options.

Save and share

Once we have added and configured the image on our Tableau dashboard, save and share your workbook.

Preview and publish

Preview the dashboard to ensure that the image appears as expected. If you are satisfied, you can publish the workbook to Tableau Server or Tableau Online to share it with others.

By following these steps, we can easily add images to our Tableau dashboard and customize their appearance to suit our design preferences.
